Electronic Kits

The electronic construction kits listed on this page have been designed for use in D&T projects. They are available in kit form where soldering and assembly is required. Module form is also available where the circuit is assembled and tested, ready for use. They incorporate the following features to make easy assembly and attachment to the projects.

  • Clear step-by-step instruction in English.
  • Good quality printed circuit board (PCB).
  • All PCBs comes with 3.5mm mounting holes.
  • Where applicable, the circuit comes with a relay so that external circuit and devices can be connected.
  • In many cases, there is programmable capaility in the output mode.
  • External switches can be soldered directly onto PCB without removing those already on board.

Digital Clock/Timer

This kit assembles into a 4-digit digital alarm clock. The display is LED which is readable in the dark. It has an alarm function that sounds a buzzer at the preset time. There is also a built-in timer function that lends itself to many applications. As such, external appliances like radios and lights can be switched ON and OFF at preset time-of-day. A relay is included in the circuit for connection to external devices.

Applications: Add-on timepiece to stationery holder, Decorative timepiece, automatic timer, etc.

Intelligent Motor Controller

This module is designed to control geared DC motors (eg Tamiya gear motors) to perform different types of directional movements. These includes motor reversal and stopping at predetermined position. The type of movement is selected by jumpers, making this module very flexible and reusable. Microswitches are used as sensors to control the limit of movement.

Applications: Robotics, automation. Motorised mechanisms.

Intelligent Servo Controller

This circuit is designed to control a hobby servo to perform different types of rotational movements. The selection is done with jumpers, making this circuit reusable and flexible. Both standard and modified servos are supported. Microswitches are used as sensors to control the limit of travel for modified servo.

Applications: Robotics, automation, motorised mechanism.

Two-Servo Controller (limited quantity)

The circuit can control two hobby servos independently. Two preset controls would enable the output disc/arm of each servo to hop between two positions precisely, within an arc of 100o. The circuit is normally powered from a 9V battery, but can be modified to work directly from 6VDC composed of four AA-size batteries. It is suitable to control both standard and modified continuous rotation servos.

Applications: Robotics, automation, motorise mechanism.

Infra-red Transmitter & Receiver

There are two circuits in this package, consisting of an infrared (IR) transmitter and a receiver. Together they form a wireless sensing system suitable for use as an IR direct beam or a reflected beam detector. In the first case, the transmitter and receiver circuits are placed opposite to each other with an invisible beam connecting the two circuits. If the beam is broken by an object, the receiver will sense it. In the reflected beam system, both circuits are placed on the same side. Normally, the IR beam is not detected by the receiver. If an object is placed in front of both circuits, the beam is bounced back to the receiver.

Applications: Alarms, invisible object detection, remote control, etc

LED Pattern Generator

This is an intelligent 8-LED running-light generator that is capable of producing four different light patterns. The circuit is designed to be able to take on an additional (optional) eight LEDs so that a total of 16 LEDs can be used to produce a very flexible running and blinking light arrangements.

Applications: Games, Light effects, Visual onament to projects, etc.

Melody Generator

This kit, when complete is capable of generating three consecutive tunes. Activation is by a pushbutton switch. The tunes are digitally stored in a microcontroller chip and are played back by generating the appropriate frequencies into a loudspeaker. The output level is sufficiently loud for indoor applications.

Applications: Musical box, Guest announciator, musical response to external stimuli, etc.

Programmable Light Operated Switch

This redesigned light switch now has five programmable output modes making it very flexible when interfacing with other circuits and devices. The circuit uses a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) to sense the level of light intensity in the environment. The sensitivity of the LDR can be adjusted. Once the intensity has exceeded the preset value, the circuit will operate a relay. The way in which the relay operates would depend on the setting of three jumpers. It can be programmed to work in five different ways.

Applications: Burglar alarm, Sunlight detector, Illustrates the use of opamp, etc.

Programmable Sound Switch

This updated circuit now has five programmable output modes making it more flexible when interfacing with other circuits and external devices. The circuit is a switch that is operated by impulse sound like the clap of hands. A microphone senses the presence of any sound in an environment. Once an impulse that is louder than the preset threshold is detected, it will operate a relay. The way in which the relay operates would depend on the setting of three jumpers. It can be programmed to work in five different ways.

Applications: Alarm, Remote control, Illustrates the use of opamp, etc.

Sound Operated Switch

The circuit is operated by sound impulse like a clap of the hands or whistle. A microphone senses any sound impulse in the environment. Once an impulse that is louder than the preset threshold is detected, it will latch a relay. A second impulse will release the relay.

Applications: Alarm, Remote control, Illustrates the use of opamp & digital gates, etc.

Programmable Temperature Switch

The sensing element of this circuit is a thermistor. The electrical resistance of the thermistor changes with the ambient temperature and the change is detected by the circuit. The temperature is set by adjusting the sensitivity of the circuit. Once the temperature has exceeded the preset value, the circuit would operate a relay. The way in which the relay operates would depend on the setting of the three jumpers. It can be programmed to work in five different ways.

Applications: Temperature alarm, temperature detector, thermal switch, etc.

Programmable Water Switch

The circuit uses the principle that water conducts electricity and therefore it has a resistance value. A pair of bare wires is used as probes to sense the presence of water. The sensitivity of the circuit can be adjusted to detect the difference between liquid water and moisture. Once the resistance has exceeded the preset value, the circuit would operate a relay. The way in which the relay operates would depend on the setting of the three jumpers. It can be programmed to work in five different ways.

Applications: Water alarm, rain detector, etc.

RoboCar Robotic Vehicle Controller

This is a robotic vehicle controller kit with two LDR light sensors. When assembled on a vehicle chassis, it is capable of tracking a line with two motors (available separately). It is a fun project, easy to assemble and is an excellent introduction to the fascinating world of electronics and robotics. The robot can be built on a custom chassis or a Tamiya chassis plate. (note: batteries not included!)

Two-digit Up/Down Counter

The completed circuit will count either up or down up sequentially to 99 counts. Two 7-segment LED displays the count status.  A preset limit can be stored into memory. When the limit is reached, the relay will operate. External devices like motors, lamps, melody, alarm, etc. can be connected to the relay. When the Clock Oscillator Module (item 11) is connected to the input, the circuit becomes a 99-second digital timer.

Applications: Games, control mechanisms, etc.

Two Digit Stop Watch

The circuit functions as a two-digit stop watch. A time limit can be set into memory. When the limit is reached, the time run would stop and the on-board relay is activated. Two seven-segment LED displays provide an indication of the time increment. Separate LEDs show the 1 or 0.1 increment mode, which can be set at will.

Applications: Games, control mechanisms, etc.

Universal/Cyclic Timer

The kit assembles into a very versatile and yet accurate timer. The timing range can be adjusted from a few seconds to half an hour. A cyclic function has been added to the general timing circuit. Besides providing an adjustable timing control, it is now able to switch external devices on and off continuously at predetermined rate. An LED provides a visual indication when timing function is in progress. A relay is also included to drive external loads of higher current such as motors, DC lamps, etc.

Applications: Egg timer, Parking timer, Time-delay alarm, Photographic Exposure Timer, Blinker, Off-on control, etc.

Standard Servo (mechanism)

A servo is an integrated mechanism, which rotates an output disc within an arc of 90o in a controlled manner. It must be connected to a servo controller circuit for it to work. The output disc can be preset to any two positions. The disc has a torque of 3.5 kg.cm. If a push rod is attached to the output disc, the rotary motion is converted to linear motion.

Applications: Rotating cams, bell cranks, etc.

Continuous Rotation Servo (mechanism)

This is a modified standard servo, which enables the output disc to rotate continuously instead of being restricted to an arc of 90o, much like a wheel of a vehicle. When used with the servo controller circuit, the rotation can be controlled very precisely to a very slow revolution rate. A modified servo is not obvious from the external look.

Applications: Motion power for wheels, pulley, gears, belt-link to large turn table platform, etc.
